Was it the greatest fantasy/romantasy book out there? Not really, BUT it was an enjoyable read...if you can get past the first third or so of the book. The early on struggles at the academy where kind of meh after a while. I would have preferred to see more about how Violet was getting her poisons, how she was helping the others study, etc.
Her issues with Jack and his crew just kind of got boring after a bit. Like, ok, we get it. She's the general's daughter and people hate her and want her dead. She's frail and fragile and her hair is just weird and she's special, ok. Let's not forget that!
Nothing wrong with any of that, btw, it just felt a bit heavy handed sometimes.
Still, the book was fun to read. And once the dragons get involved, it's even more enjoyable. I love the banter between Violet and the dragons. Andarna? Please. I need more of her, she's adorable.
As for the romance between Violet and Xander...I mean, it was predictable, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. I would like to see him give up more secrets though. His keeping secrets for the sake of it, gets old after a bit. And sure he has his reasons for some, but at some point there is either trust between them or their isn't. Time to choose Xander.
Anyway. Like I said...was it the best book? No. But it was still fun to read and I'm going into the second book with medium expectations and expect to enjoy it about as much as I did this one. If anything, book two looks even more promising given how book one ended...

This book stole my heart. I am absolutely in love. The writing, the story, the dragons. It’s all amazing. November can’t come soon enough for the next book!!
This is the best book I’ve ever read in my entire life.
What a FUN read! I saw a review categorize this as a “romantacy” and if that is a thing, sign me up! It was like if the worlds of Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Hunger Games had a love child. I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure (academic/war college setting), the spice (enemy’s to lovers trope) and magical/mythical (dragons and wielding magical skills) parts of this story. Giving it a 4 only because it was a bit of a slow burn for me personally. Of the critiques I have, none really influenced my overall enjoyment (especially enough to include in a review where I would have to turn on a spoiler alert.

This book is great for those looking for a shallow story with flat characters and a poorly written plot
