What a strange and dark and spiritual and courageous novel. It’s not an easy read but I’d say it’s unforgettable.

Reading this is like stepping out of a hot stuffed room into a cold morning. Every sentence feels both intentional and effortless. The reader is so immersed in her world. The clarity that comes through the book is a reminder that you can essentially write about ...not that much ..for the entirety of a book and have it be a page turner because strong writing is more compelling than a 600 pager of 10 subplots with 20 species that spans 5000 years. I'm finding here the escape (into the wilderness and another consciousness) what I long to find in all of the fantasy and sci Fi I've read this year.

An absolutely wonderfully written book with an absolutely horrible ending choice by the author.
Otherwise would have been 5 stars.

Listened to the audiobook beautifully narrated by January LaVoy. 3.5 stars
The beginning of the novel had me thinking this would be a plot heavy story, and I think I missed out on some of its richness cause I was waiting for more action, more of a chase, and more characters. I think I would have gotten more out of it sooner if I'd worked out this novel is more a meditation on being a body and living a full sensual life in the natural world - all things I'm interested in. Once this clicked for me, I enjoyed it much more, even though, like in 'Matrix', I never felt very invested in the protagonist or other characters for some reason. I wish I did. The beautiful prose kept me going though.
