It was a page-turner for me.  I appreciated the bold writing at the end - had notes of Tolstoy and George Eliot and pulled it off.  Highly recommend.

Beautifully written (Groff of course, knows her stuff), but in the end just too (DON'T READ FURTHER IF YOU HATE SPOILERS YOUSE)...

... unrelentingly bleak and sad. A small story, a small protagonist with a small life. But, no life is small and all life is small in the vast bigness of the world. I just was left ... sad, that after saying over and over that humans are not meant to live a life alone, that this girl was left to live a life alone.

Beautifully written and compelling. I liked the lead character, and I was cheering her on for her wit and bravery. So, I found the ending dark and depressing. It put a negative spin on the whole story.

I think the stories that follow man vs nature are the most difficult for me to read. The book feels very repetitive because it’s a singular character trying to survive every day, and nothing significant happens. But we do get a ton of detail on her bowel movements…..

I love how Geoff writes, but the story didn’t quite engage me as I would’ve liked. Spoiler alert-ish): I was not invested in the character, so the death- and time-themed ending—another galaxies-colliding universal-truth ending à la “Fates and Furies”—was wasted. Maybe a better bedside read over a longer period than an audio book…
