this book blew me away. its brutal, unforgiving, at times absolutely stomach turning, also beautiful. lauren groff’s prose really did something for me here. i couldn’t stop reading and i don’t feel let down - i think a lot of people will find themselves turned off by this book’s bleakness and brutality (and yes, all the shitting i guess… which seems an appropriate specter to be haunting this novel, as dying of shitting yourself to death [dehydration] of unclean/uncooked/diseased food and water is both terribly easy and a real threat to her). i found it to be a cathartic and gripping novel that moved me deeply!

The was a very beautifully written book with lots of deep, maybe even profound, musing. But ultimately I felt the story dragged and was ready for it be to over.

This book wasn’t exactly what I expected it to be, based on the blurb. It was a book club read. I think the perspective was interesting, but I didn’t find the execution as engaging as I had hoped. I wanted to care about the protagonist, but up until the very end, I wasn’t sure why, and ultimately, she was forgettable.

I wanted to love this book… it has all the themes I love: the woods, survival, the triumph and harshness and beauty of nature. I inhaled it, largely bc I just wanted it to GET somewhere. And in the end, I felt kind of empty when it was over. There are beautiful scenes in this book that will stay with me. But overall, I didn’t love it. (Maybe I just wanted it to be North Woods 🙃).
