Would you choose the man or the bear?

Good God, this book is just one horror after another. I kept hoping it would take a turn, but no. Other than being well written, I can’t recommend it.

It took a while to get into this, but I’m so glad I stuck with it. The Vaster Wilds reminded me a lot of Matrix, which I loved. The writing is gorgeous and I learned a lot about a specific time and place.

LOVED this book. Some really beautiful prose.

Somehow, this extremely dark book will leave you wanting to go out and stare in wonder at the intricacy of a piece of bark on a tree in your backyard.

Absolutely luscious

Very bleak and heavy on the descriptive prose. I didn't hate it but I didn't particularly like it.

I usually gravitate toward very plot-driven books and this book… is not that. I was about 30 pages in and thought I was going to hate it but ended up really enjoying this journey. Groff's writing is just so beautiful and this book invites you to slow down, stay in the story, and see what happens. It's a survival story about an indentured servant that escapes the Jamestown colony (which famously died off from starvation) in 1609. It has some gorgeous passages about nature and religion and appreciating beauty and life… several moments I had to stop and reread a passage just to fully appreciate it. I feel like this story surprised me in many ways and will stick with me for a while.

This book is not for everyone, but if you’re willing to slow down and see where it takes you, you just may love it.
