This one is really stumping me rating-wise. Beautiful + effective writing, very challenging plot? I 100% would have (and did, upon a previous attempt) abandoned this if it wasn't for book club. But also became invested in where the central character would end up.

Uh...will keep processing.

The last couple chapters of the book are really beautiful and give great perspective on some of the other events that took place. However I felt that a lot of the book kept the reader at arms length from the characters, and from some of the major themes that eventually get folded in. Some of the main characters survival story felt a little unrealistic (like how she stole the duck eggs and killed the mother duck right next to the father duck without him ever waking). If there were a word bubble of the words most used in this book, I feel like “verily” and “piss” would be the most prominent words.
