Trauma galore. Painfully so. Unhinged for the sake of being unhinged. I understand why there are people enjoying this. I am not one of them.
Please check trigger warnings. There is rarely something that fades to black. To go into this blind is not a good idea.

I loved "Convenience Store Woman" for its life perspective and Sayaka Murata's quirky, tender writing.  And "Earthlings" was very similar in writing style and theme.  HOWEVER, the triggers in this book were much darker and more than I could take in a New England winter.

By having wildly alianated main characters, Sakaya Murata puts correct observations about the state of society in a whole new perspective. This was an excellent read. It's not everyone's cup of tea but it's definitely good and it is definitely my cup of tea.

This book has some very triggering content so please protect yourself and check the content warnings. However it was not as weird, gross and gory as some of the other reviews would've let me to believe. Especially if you're a horror fan, the horror is pretty mild.

oh wow. where to even start? a unique, extremely dark, and satirical take on the constraints and pressures of society’s expectations: a portrayal of extreme anomie. murata did not hold back on the scrutiny. she captured the whimsical and overactive imagination of children so perfectly, especially when it came to processing trauma. this was an amazing portrayal of childhood trauma and how that affects people differently in adulthood. the last two chapters or so were a whirlwind of “wtf” but i was still captivated. extremely excited to read convenience store woman.
