What the fuck was that????
I'm very conflicted because on the one hand, was I 'entertained'? Yes, I guess, mainly because I was like what the hell is happening, but I'm not sure it was a good entertained, it was a shocked entertained. For the most part, this book was pretty disgusting - the inclusion of the child rape, the normalisation of that by the child's friends and family, an abusive family, incest, cannibalism... the list goes on - for the purposes of what exactly?? It felt like these things were included purely for shock value, rather than to actually have something to say. I did enjoy the main point about societal/family pressure to fit in, get married, have kids and the impact that has on people who do not want that, but you can easily talk about that pressure without glorifying child rape...
I'm also not sure if this is a cultural difference but the overbearing and obsessive families drove me INSANE.... LEAVE YOUR GOD DAMN ADULT KIDS ALONEEEEEE!
I thought that alien aspect was also fun, and served a deeper purpose in terms of storytelling. That is how you include a strange topic to say something deeper about society, you do not need to include incest to do that!!!!
Yeahhhh I really don't know how to rate this, 3 stars feels too generous. It's weird to say that the murder and cannibalism aspect of this book is the least of my problems with it lmao.

Quotes I liked:
-'He continued to survive, and so did I. If I asked myself what I was surviving for, I couldn't really say.'
-'People can easily pass judgement on others when they're protected by their own normality'

The audiobook version has a great narrator (Nancy Wu, via Blackstone Publishing).

All of Murata’s novels take me to a different world. It’s easy to tell the character’s motivations and fun to go along with their journeys but in this one I ask “at what cost?” Hard one to rate!
