God, I loved this. Time travel being used as a metaphor for forgiveness and hope is such a brilliant idea
Book club pick. Wouldn’t have read otherwise, but I enjoyed it enough. Liked the characters

DNF around 30%. Second of the year! I couldn't get into it at all and I never want to pick it up. I'm bored and I don't really care about the characters. I loved the premise and I wanted to enjoy it, but it may be too heavy for the state of the world, my to do list, and everything else going on with me now. I miss wanting to pick up a book so I'm excited to give up, even though it took me over a week to convince myself to throw in the towel.

It's a meh time travel story with a lot of interesting ideas that weren't tied together very well. I also found the authors self insert meta narrative jarring and poorly incorporated into the story

this was a weird book. maybe i’ll come back and write a real review. or maybe i won’t. only time will tell.
I would like to preface this review by saying that this was not a bad book. I am not a fan of character-driven stories and if this book had been written as a plot-driven narrative, it would have gotten a much higher rating from me. There were moments throughout the book that I found myself zoning out and struggling to focus on what was happening because it felt like NOTHING was happening. Then, all of a sudden, a major plot point would occur and I was on high alert, ready for the story to progress.
Something that I will praise the book for is the commentary on how immigrants feel when interacting with white people. Reading this book from the perspective of a child of immigrants who is also white passing, I found the main character to be extremely relatable. The moments in which the author discusses being treated differently, whether intentions are good or bad, resonated with me the most.
In real life, people who perform microaggressions are stuck in the past, as if they have time traveled and do not yet understand how to interact with, or talk about someone of a different race. In my day-to-day life, people feel comfortable talking to me about their distaste for immigrants because they see me as “one of them,” and it feels like I am a double-agent who has to decide the best way to interact with those people- do I reveal that I was born in the U.S. and my parents weren’t, or do I play along and allow others to believe that nothing they are saying is hurting me directly? It is especially frustrating that I feel this way when my parents are legal immigrants and are both highly successful in the medical field. Some people are ignorant enough to look at my parents as if they are less valuable citizens, regardless of the fact that they know more about this country’s history than they do, or that they pay higher taxes than they do, or that they are the ones who are treating the sick and injured.
The themes in this book and the discussions and questions that were raised while reading it are what make it worth reading. That, and I enjoyed the romance between the two main characters. There were many moments that could have either been omitted or written in a different manner, and that would have made this book a 4 or 5-star read for me.
However, the ending left me feeling melancholic, and evoked a more emotional reaction than I expected to have after experiencing so many lulls throughout the book. That is something that I always seek when I start a new book- literature that makes me question my world and myself. It is worth the read.
