There's some weird race stuff in this (especially with how the main character talks in relation to the Mexican food he's exposed to??) and it was mostly just about this white man going through a mid-life crisis. It just wasn't for me!

This is getting a one star review because it is a book, and I did, in fact, finish reading it (due to peer pressure). This book is awful. The main character is deeply unlikeable, does not grow, and thinks his life is awful, even though it isn’t. The level of detail is absurd and unnecessary, making this book about four times longer than it needs to be. It’s poorly written and thinks too highly of itself. It feels homophobic, despite being written by a gay man. It’s racist, sexist, classist, ableist, and fatphobic. I don’t know what the Pulitzer Prize people were on, but unless you have some, don’t read this.

I didn't really know what to expect from this but it turned out to be a funny and warm read. The story is a little all over the place, (probably to be expected as Arthur Less travels round the world) but I particularly enjoyed the focus on the characters. Less is often a frustrating main character but after a slow start my perspective on him started to change and I couldn't help but feel for him as he gets in and out of awkward situations. Once he was into his world trip and surrounded by quirky characters on every stop, I felt really invested. Also, I wasn't expecting to be as attached to the love story so that was a pleasant surprise.
