This book follows Emily and James on another code-breaking adventure. This one had some unique historical and cultural depth to it, which I appreciated. I found Emily's fear of her parent's financial situation endearing and plausible. The presidential games at the dance sounded like a load of fun. While I could see the twist coming near the end (I won't spoil it), it was well done, but wrapped up a little too quickly. The author's notes in the back also added more to the story - yes, this is fiction, but it's neat connecting the dots with "real" history too.

Excellently woven mystery and ode to books. Fans of the first book will not be disappointed.

Just as enjoyable as the first! I did prefer the large amounts of literary references in the first book (more than this one), but I enjoyed the plot of this book more.

My 8 year old didn’t finish this book, but I can’t help but think the theme of arson contributed to that. It’s one of her fears, so she doesn’t do well with books that detail that in the plot. There are some intense scenes with fire, so if that’s a struggle with your kid, keep that in mind.

Ok, so I really loved this book. And I loved its predecessor. I am an unabashed Book Scavenger fan. I remember feeling slightly irritated within the first few weeks of having both of my children when people would ask me, "So, are you going to have another one?" But now, I am the one doing the asking. Ms. Bertman, when are you going to have another one??? I am eagerly anticipating the day!

This one wasn't as enjoyable as the first. It didn't have the same level of literary mystery as the first and I really missed that (and that's my favorite part of these books!). However, I did this as a read-aloud with my 8-year-old and she loved it, and she's probably the actual target audience...so there you go :)

Emily and James have stumbled across another mystery; this one involving the legendary "Unbreakable Code" that supposedly will lead to some kind of treasure. Emily is desperate to find this treasure to help her parents, who are in financial trouble. To solve the mystery Emily and James must find several encryptions placed inside books written by Mark Twain that have been hidden around San Francisco and using the Book Scavenger website for clues. When they realize that their teacher, Mr. Quisling may be after the same clues, the two sleuths begin to follow him in hopes of getting a jump on the mystery.

The Unbreakable Code is another fun book in the Book Scavenger series. As the title suggests, this episode focuses more on code breaking and less on books, however, there is still an element of the story involving books. There is very little in this book that hinges on the personal lives of the characters, but the plot is very thought-provoking, requiring some thought as the book is being read. Overall, The Unbreakable Code is an enjoyable read, especially for those who like puzzles and codes.
3 1/2 stars.
