Having finished this book, I'm still trying to figure out exactly what kind of book it is. I guess, at bottom it's horror, but the horror kind of creeps up on you from under the writing about food and the south and the house itself.

Nomadic writer Martin Temple has finally landed in small-town South Carolina and moved in to Charybdis, the ancestral home of the aristocratic Augurs. The secrets of Charbydis and the Augurs keep him from finding the peace that he was seeking in his early retirement.
