Entertaining and action-packed, lots of drama and fights. The historical background was well woven into the general narrative. Fans of Chinese fantasy/martial arts TV series or people already familiar with this type of story will enjoy, but I could see the storytelling style and ample descriptions of kung-fu moves being a little daunting to newcomers to the genre. Going in, I was a bit worried after seeing comments questionning the quality of the English translation, but I found the flow of the writing to be very good

For a boring white kid with a weird love for old fashioned pulp hero sagas? Great fun. Like making my friends watch the handful of Wuxia movies that made it into English subtitle distribution through Hollywood Video in the late 90s. Like watching Zorro when the Disney channel used it as midnight filler. Like the games you play tat are excuses to beat your little brother with a stick. Pure, delightful id, on the surface, run through with tension and drama in the ~1/4 of the book not spent describing various punches.

Despite the main character not even being born for the first third or so of this book, it felt like a lot was happening all at once!

This book runs at a breakneck speed but it never feels so fast you feel left behind. There are a lot of twists and turns that come straight out of nowhere but I was never upset by them.

This book isn't heavy, though there are many injuries and points at which another book would have made it heavy. Like the characters' lightness kungfu it leaps gracefully from place to place and if a series of wacky hijinks is what you're looking for then this is definitely it.
