What. A. Dud. This is a total surprise to me as this is Jenny Holiday's most popular book on Goodreads and I've loved almost every book of hers I've read, so I was hoping this would be a slam dunk.
Alas, it was not to be. This book felt very tepid, like Jenny Holiday strived to be as inoffensive as possible with these incredibly bland characters. You've got a royal princess who's got the personality of a cardboard cutout, a New York City cabbie who feels a little bit more filled out but not substantially so, and then a conflict that honestly was significant and yet, was written to be fairly low stakes and a foregone conclusion. I know that genre expectations mean that all conflict resolutions are foregone conclusions, but I still would like to be convinced for a second that these two are not gonna be together, you know?
All these elements combined mean that I was suuuuuuuuper bored for a significant chunk of the book. There was a surprising lack of interiority for these characters and I also found it a huge departure from Jenny Holiday's other books that there's so much showing and not telling.
