A really interesting little novella, told as a deathbed conversation between a woman and a boy who is possibly a hallucination. To me the most compelling part of this book is the way it plays with the interaction between its political horror and the inklings of something more supernatural. Although you can read it as supernatural, to me it is instead a tale of how, when the things that are victimizing you are way beyond your control as an individual, the way one can find a refuge in superstition and how this can both comfort you and distract you from recognizing the actual problems present. A neat book, albeit one I'm at times slightly ambivalent about.

I enjoyed this, the atmosphere was creepy and left me feeling uneasy. But it also left me confused lol

This book was absolutely fantastic. Well written and completely engrossing. The story is mainly a conversation between two people , a woman and a child, where the woman is trying to understand what is happening to her. Somehow with just conversations the author was able to create an unfolding story that gives an eerie feel.

It has been a while since I have read a book that is reflective and not catered to “junk food” storylines. When the story ended it left me feeling sad, sadden by the fate of each character.

I highly recommend to though who want a short creepy tale! I will definitely read again.

Wow. I am just absolutely blown away by this book. It was so tense and engaging. As a mother, I absolutely connected with the ideas of motherhood and protecting you child. I was drawn in by the structure of the story, which was very original and mysterious without being overly confusing. Throughout most of the story, I thought it had figured out what was going on and was enjoying the supernatural aspects of the tale. Then, with the climax, everything is flipped on its head and now I'm split between two different readings.

Were David and Nina's souls actually split by the witch doctor? Or is this a more straightforward story of enviornmental pollution viewed as something more by locals who do not understand?

I am amazed that the author could so effectively do so many things at once- weave two equally interesting and compelling tales, let them both live in the same narrative as a commentary on how they coexist in reality, make the story so tense and keep me gathering clues and asking questioning what I knew, use the structure to navigate timelines and reader focus. This was extremely well written, chilling, and the message is loud. I'll be thinking about this one for a while.
