Think Again

Jacqueline Wilson

The second Ellie met Alice I surfaced from the book to tell my friend this book was gonna be gay. I enjoyed the nostalgia of revisiting characters from the original series (I wish Dan had been at the party too) but I liked Mr Windsor in the Girls books but damn I do not like Gary but at least Ellie got a good lay or 10 out of it. I wish we'd had an epilogue or an internal AHA moment from Ellie because even though I knew we were always going here, breaking up with Gary and kissing Alice a few hours later despite never really examining her feelings or thinking she might like her (even though it's obvious to the reader) felt weirdly abrupt. I guess I would have liked to see more around that but I did love reading it and catching up with the characters again after all these years. And I love the fact that Ellie is queer now, it just makes sense.

So nostalgic reading about characters I read about as a teenager!

Loved this as a nostalgia read, not groundbreaking, but a lovely cosy read for fans of the original books. Very much read like a YA or even middle grade novel in style though, despite the addition of adult topics. I also wish the plot had gone further - we want to know what happened next! There was unnecessary repetition in the middle that could've been skipped to make space for the plot to advance further. My rating is perhaps boosted because none of this stopped me from enjoying it.

Re the audio narration - the voice used for Magda was insufferable, unrealistic and so unnecessary. This took away from the parts of the book where she appeared.

Hmm overhyped. Felt very much like a normal Jaqueline Wilson book, felt very teenager-y, but with more adult themes. And the shameless plug of The Illustrated Mum annoyed me!!

I’m glad that Ellie finally got her happy ending but she felt very selfish at times and also very whingy like she was in the previous books other than that I loved the nostalgia and references of Wilson’s other work that we all grew up with!
