When All is Said

Anne Griffin

3.89 AVERAGE

Ontroerend, grappig, mooi geschreven.

Anne Griffin’s When All Is Said is one of the most well-written books I’ve read this year, with beautifully crafted language and a lyrical quality that makes each sentence shine. She has a masterful way of placing words, creating moments of deep emotion and resonance. There are some truly stunning quotes throughout, and the novel succeeds in being poignant at times. Maurice Hannigan’s reflections on his life, particularly his relationship with his wife, are heartfelt and moving. However, despite these strengths, I found myself struggling to stay engaged with the story.

I wanted to like this book more than I did, but ultimately, I found it boring. While the writing is excellent, the novel needed to be fleshed out more to keep me invested. The characters had potential, but outside of Maurice and his wife, I didn’t really care for them. The structure, with Maurice’s toasts guiding the narrative, was an interesting concept, but it wasn’t enough to hold my attention. There’s no doubt that Griffin is a talented writer, but I just wish the story had more depth and momentum to fully captivate me.

This book was sweet, beautiful, and made me cry several times. A great read.

Although knowing where this book will take you, you are along for the ride. I found myself rather fond of the main character, and felt a sense of mourning after the book was finished. There were bits that were repetitive, I felt as if storylines could be two entirely different books on their own. I was in tears just 75 pages in and I could've stayed in that chapter for the rest of the book. I do wish some elements of the story were moved along faster or really fleshed out the sense of grief, trauma, and delayed emotional response a person can feel. It would've made the story more whole and let the character become more complex - without needing additional story lines to show the characters life.
