Male narrator threw me off. I probably would have liked it better as a non-audiobook. Pretty slow, boring, lots of words for little substance.
Here you will meet a wonderful, loveable man - 84 year old Maurice who's life story is so intertwined with the Dollards that it requires this novel to uncover it all. In retelling his story from his eyes you are truly able to understand his actions and the thoughts behind them.
Seen as a difficult man by many around him, but also loyal and astute, his charm and wit really come through the pages.

A very tidy, wholesome story of an old man looking back at his life. On the right side of twee. The Irish setting and voices brought a lot to the party.
At first, I didn't like the style, but it grew on me. I admit I was charmed by the 5 toasts. I liked the narrator and I thought this was an interesting way to tell a life story. The concept definitely nudged this one up a half star. The story itself was entertaining and mixed in a few surprises.
The ending felt pretty inevitable and it didn't manage to stir up much emotion.

Perhaps not the best book to read when you're grieving, but I was certainly drawn in to the lives of the narrator, Maurice Hannigan and his family. I nearly didn't make it past the first section, which almost finished me off, but thankfully, the rest of the book wasn't quite so heartbreaking, at least until the end. You've been warned.
I absolutely LOVED this book....both the writing, characters and story were magnificent!
