Once I got past the initial world building part of the book and really got into the meat of the story, I really enjoyed the world Tanya Huff created.

Wow, this is fast-paced and action-packed! It's intriguing to learn more about the different aliens that inhabit this universe and the ways in which they relate and interact with one another. Torin is a great main character who comes across with a strong voice and knows what she is doing. Even with suspicions heading into the ending, it was a bit of a stunner! I'm looking forward to reading the next book.

Rip roaring space opera with a riff on Rorke's Drift, lizard people and interstellar marines. Some things really never change, whether it is Welsh people or plasma rifles.

I really enjoyed this book. I don’t read much sci-fi but I was able to follow along and understand the new tech without the author spoon feeding it to me.
Really good for a sci-fi newbie who wants a woman in charge and taken seriously

First book of the series introduces an interesting world with some excellent alien species, and a solid female main character.

This book had a little too much of the alien battle scenes for me, but also had some decent humour and some good characters.
adventurous dark

Classic military sci-fi, balancing aliens, humor, and the horrors of war within pew-pew lasers. (Though they use projectile weapons for anti-hacking reasons...).

Not worth reading. Unconscious bias/racism no thank you. Wish I hadn’t read this it’s crap.

I was looking for something that gave the same vibe as the early Honor Harrington books but without Weber's weird monarcho-centrist political rants, and boy howdy this was exactly what I was hoping to find.
