Got about 20% through it. Maybe it was just the narrator of the audiobook reading too quickly as well but just didn't enjoy it. A lot of the time I was wondering who was even speaking and who the characters were.

Sorry.

Three years ago I started this book and shortly after left it in the back burner. What was I thinking? What the hell was wrong with me? This time around I've had a blast! I loved it! I loved Torin! I loved the banter! I want more! Gimme more!!!

I listened to this and was confused at first, trying to keep track of names, species, ranks. Then I decided it didn't matter all that much. As I read along, I thought the book was ok. When I finished (nice twist at the end) I decided I liked it. And, since I've been thinking about it quite a bit after I finished it, I realized I liked it quite a bit.

What did I like? The main character, although she might be just a hair too perfect. I love the themes of Honor, and loyalty.

May add more as I continue to think.

Unfortunately, I found the first half of this book to be so slow. It was like watching a sloth run through a tar pit. The first half of the book more or less consisted of banter between the soldiers, some of which was amusing, but mainly banal.

The second half was where the action resided, and the excitement. Valour, honour, self-sacrifice, and all the other platitudes of military service were on show.

A small contingent of troops, greatly outnumbered by the enemy. With a big show-and-tell climax at the end. The story is reminiscent of the 1964 film Zulu, which the author does mention in their notes. If you can make it through the tar pit, then it might be worth your while.

This isn’t my first Tanya Huff book but it is my first of her science fiction novels and she really exceeded my expectations. I can see why this is one of her most popular series.

I think this one was just not for me. I'm not really a military science fiction kind of person (except for Star Trek TNG and DS9, if that counts), and although I did appreciate all the different alien species (some delightfully imaginative) and how the Confederation worked out how all the species could work together, I found most of the characters to be too superficial, and the plot itself did not grab me. Action scenes in general don't really do it for me, either, so I was pretty bored in the last quarter of the book.

The symmetry is delicious. Also, Haysole lives a long, happy, and debaucherous life. I have ordained it so.

I expected more hahas from Tanya Huff but it was an okay story. I love military sci fi but this one felt like it was missing something
