"really skilful people never get out of time, and are always deliberate, and never appear busy"

Timing is key
Practice is key, repeat repeat repeat
Practice real situations, repeat
Light to your back
Exit and free to your left
Chase the enemy to awkward spaces, always awkward behind them so they can't see, into obstacles
When you attack, be quicker than normal, unsettle him
Know your strengths, make moves when advantageous to you and know your course
If contending in the same spirit as the enemy, stop that strategy and hit with something he would not

Do not take the pace of the opponent. Set your own and try to influence him to yours

I may have missed the deeper meaning, but I got bored.

This book is a weird one. It was clearly intended as more of a "manual" than a book to be read, indeed it says so halfway through. It reads easily enough, and covers several techniques of ancient Japanese sword strategy. Though it was enjoyable enough, and there were some interesting passages when read through a metaphorical lens, I cannot say that I found much of substance. It struck me, more than anything else, as "A Soldier's Guide to Buddhism".

Rating:
3/5 - None of it was unpleasant to read, but none of it was particularly engrossing either. It's short enough not to drag but long enough to get rid of its mystique. In general, it does nothing well and nothing badly. I think I am just far too fundamentally removed from its intended audience.

Who I'd recommend this to:
An actual samurai.

Mainly read this since it’s what inspired one of my favorite manga, Vagabond. It was okay. I don’t think it’s for everyone, it’s definitely something you’d need to sit with to really make worth your while. Life lessons are imbedded deep and can easily be missed but aside from that pieces written by historical figures are always interesting reads! 3 Stars.
