The subversion of expectations in the ending really makes this novella classic King. The sudden switch from achieving the main goal to an esoteric dream land leaves the main characters satisfied, but the reader with an unsettled feeling.
Despite the fact that many fellow passengers died to reach the present time, the remainders seem unaffected by all losses and allow themselves to escape.  This unerving ending also contributes to a dream like feel that’s been building throughout the work. This quality is emphasized by the sometimes one dimensional characters. While the motivations are clearly and at times over defined, I find it hard to care about them and their interactions. However, Craig Toomy stood out to me as the most compelling character. All of the things which changed the stories perception of him (his death, Dinah telling the others they needed him) happen unwittingly and unknowingly to him, a juxtaposition to the personal sense of control and power that he has.
Overall, The Langoliers raises questions about human perspective and what it takes to truly be satisfied in a medium not traditionally associated with this kind of analysis.

I read 3 out of 4 novels of this book.
Langoliers being my favourite, I liked The library Policeman as well.

I much prefer King when he is writing short stories than the too wordy, long drawn out novels. Kind of how I much prefer the Monster of the Week format of X-Files versus the long drawn out overreaching arcs
