Four Past Midnight

Stephen King

3.8 AVERAGE

I wasn't overly impressed with this collection on the whole. I somewhat liked the Langoliers and liked the Library Policeman. The other two weren't really my cup of tea...er horror stories.

The Langoliers - 3.5/5
It was good and pretty fast-paced with a solid general plot, it’s just that I found every single character lowkey so frustrating and annoying at some point

Secret Window, Secret Garden - 4/5
Psychological, unreliable narrator 👀

The Library Policeman - 3/5
TW: child SA

The Sun Dog - 3.5/5
Good, was very standard Stephen King vibes lol
dark mysterious tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

This is a collection of stories including The Langoliers, Secret Window, The Sun Dog, and Library Policeman. A trigger warning for Library Policeman, there is a huge part of the plot revolving around SA of a child. This is typical I’m King’s stories, but even more so in that story and it really sticks out to me even years after reading it.

These stories are all quite good, two of the, have been made into movies that are pretty good as well. I listened to these on audible and would recommend it.

Meh. Compared to King's other short story collections this one is lackluster. My favorite was The Langoliers; the rest were pretty much all the same to me... which sucks.

A very interesting concept presented with a lot of suspense. The writing is solid, without any of the pacing jerks I'm used to in some of Stephen King's works. Nevertheless, for all its good writing, it didn't really hold me. I felt more of a connection with the characters watching them in the miniseries rather than in the book. Overall, I enjoyed The Langoliers and would recommend it to people who are already fans of King's work.
