Four Past Midnight

3.8 AVERAGE

Pretty consistently average among all the stories. There wasn't one that was a stand out for me.
dark mysterious tense slow-paced

The first horror movie I ever watched as a child was "The Langoliers". It was one of those seriel movies they play in parts over multiple nights on cable TV. I was maybe.... 4 or 5.

Since then, the stage was set. I was hooked on all things eerie and weird and terrifying. It took me a while to find the original story that the movie was spurned from, but when I did, I ate it up. This book is a collection of short stories, but the highlight for me was definitely "The Langoliers".

OT: Four Past Midnight

Stephen King is a special guy. When a publisher asks an author to hand in a collection of stories, you’d usually end up with 15-20 stories and a 300–500-page book. Not with Mr. King, though. This is a collection of four stories that weighs in at 1,154 pages (in the German translation). And still, when I rated these separately not one, but two of my friends told me that the respective story was amongst their favorite SK short stories. Ha ha! Yeah, he is special.

I’m glad to report that three of the four stories were totally worth my time. Even The Langoliers, which I had read already (and didn’t like the first time around), was pretty entertaining. And while the book ended on a low for me, overall this was very enjoyable.

My favorite story in this little collection is The Sun Dog.

I liked the Langoliers, and thought the movie version sucked.

This collection has Secret Window (which they made the movie out of...I was so disappointed, the written tale is SO much better than the movie, tho that might have something to do with the teeny bopper girly girls who giggled over Johnny (old enough to be their dad) throughout the flick! arg...)

I don’t think any of the stories in this book were spectacular, but overall they were all solid. The Langoliers had a creepy mood and I really liked the ending, I just felt that the short format left the characters a little underdeveloped. Secret Window Secret Garden was a great psychological portrait of an author’s descent into madness, but I found the twist a little predictable. The Library Policeman was probably my favorite because I really liked how we were able to learn so much about the behavior of the monster and the characters, especially Dave, were well done. The Sun Dog also had a great creepy mood, but the ending felt too short for all of the buildup.
