The fourth star is for a pretty strong plot but I struggled with the writing style. I found myself rearranging sentences to make them tighter and snappier. I put it down for a long time but the premise made me come back to it and I admit to reading until I could barely keep my eyes open, I was so entertained. While there are some missed opportunities in the writing, I’d read the next book in the series.

I really enjoyed this. I like how it started, I like where it went, I was invested the whole time. I did guess things but was still interested to see how it played out and a few things I wasn't expecting happened so I feel like it did a great job. Super excited to continue the series.

A decent period mystery. Louise is a compelling main character, and her story and the time period make for a fun read. However, in an effort to ratchet up tension, the author repeatedly used narrative techniques that annoyed me. Phrases like, "but she'd never know how wrong she was", or, "she'd wish she followed that advice" kept being used and I just didn't feel like the reader needed those hints. There are plenty of better ways to imply tension and foreshadowing without outright saying it. They always brought me out of the action. I might go in for sequels, but they're not very high on my list.

This was pretty disappointing. Could easily be a two or three star read. So many questions with no answers. The writing was decent, yet it felt like reading at least two different books at once. The characters left something to be desired and the overall plot, was pretty bland. This could’ve been great but missed the mark. I have the second book, already checked out, so I may give it a try, but I don’t have high hopes.

3.5 round up. Not really a mystery fan. I figured out who the killer was within the first 2 hours. I figured out the why not too long after.

Loved the premise. Poorly executed. Very disappointed.

I think Louise is what really carried this book for me— I was less compelled by the mystery than by her personality, backstory, and relationships with other characters. I love the '20s as a setting, especially for a murder mystery, and I appreciated getting a glimpse at an oft-ignored perspective of that period through Louise.
