Thought this would be a 3 star book, but the ending made me go for 4 stars.

This story is set in a dark, gothic world with a unique magic system. The cards, the mist, the infection… Very special, yet not overly complicated. I felt like this part of the story was well fleshed out, while the characters remained quite flat, unfortunately.

Elsphet has a monster in her head, The Nightmare. This was really interesting because the monster didn’t feel like a monster, nor a nightmare. The Nightmare looks out for Elsphet, but all magic has a price, and he can’t do anything about it. Elsphet was really intriguing, yet I don’t feel like I know her after reading this book. Like I said, flat characters.

That being my main remark, I did like this book and enjoyed it. The ending left me wanting for more. So why not give it the 4 stars, if I enjoyed it despite its flaws?

the writing style does the magic system concept a huge disservice — I read only two of the Nightmares rhymes and had to put the book down. you’re really gonna sit here and tell me this magical being that’s fearsome and powerful speaks in nursery rhymes?

Can’t decide if I’d rate this 4 or 4.25, I prefer the sequel if I have to say which is my favorite!

This is the first romantasy I ever listened to that feels like a fairytale: dark, murky, mysterious, the rhymes add to the overall dark fairytale vibe. I love the audiobook readers: very different from other romantasy I’ve read. I also like the concept of the Providence cards & the infection, and the world building around that.
I also like how it feels like a complete fairytale- the scope is smaller. The world holding being just one kingdom with most cutting off access to others works & makes it feel more like a fairytale too with a self contained kingdom/world.

Fascinating and unique magic system. Easy read yet with moments of brilliant prose. Really a standout book
