Good connection between Raven and Elspeth. Unique magic system that kept me intrigued and wanting to learn more! Loved the dark gothic setting and the woods magic keeping them hemmed in was also very unique. Wish the cards had been utilized a bit more but I have good hopes for book two. Also interested to see how the Shepard king is going use Elspeth and his control over her to help the Yew family.

I don't know if I've just outgrown this kind of book or if this was actually bad, but it didn't do it for me the way I thought it would. I found the heroine unlikeable and the constant rhyming and repetition of certain phrases became really annoying after a while. It was a very slow burn and, while it did get better towards the end, I'm unsure if I'm intrigued enough to finish the duology.

A magic system involving an old forest god/spirit that has been wronged, a deck of cards that give the holder specific powers, consequences to over-use of magic, a long dead king, a monster, a young woman looking for a quiet life, and an "infection" that shortens the liftspan of a person but gives them great power - if they can escape detection from the law (royal guard /physicians), as the only legal type of magic is via the deck of cards.

It is a wild ride, learning the lore as you go, and wilder still are the backstories of the main characters. Definitely a book that is hard to put down! Tw for violence / executions / mind control and more!
