⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of the defining books on humanity, a sort of Russian Forrest Gump. The Idiot here is meant to be a christ like figure of purity, a character not corrupted by human evils. Too innocent to see the world in any way other than goodness. But here I think Dostoyevsky failed, his character ‘The Idiot’ feels not like someone who doesn’t understand the world, but more like somebody who especially does. He has seen the world, matured in situations where he has had that opportunity, he acts well and not mindlessly. Surrounded by Russian society, it seems that in the stories he tells, (of the executed man) and things he has experienced he merely has a perspective on the world outside of petty, individual struggles. ‘Crime and Punishment’ had the message: ‘Someone who cannot live honestly, will barely live’, and this novel the message, ‘Someone who has not lived, cannot live honestly’

I've never been so happy to have finished a book. Painful. Best part of this book is referring to Myshkin as "Mushkin" ...like Pushkin, but with an M.
Also: that is not the correct pronunciation.
Also: why does every character have to have 50 names?
Also: This book should be called The IdiotS.
As my friend Blythe says, they all need therapy.

This book was challenging to get through (it is Russian literature so that makes sense), but I am definitely glad I read it. This book explores what would happen if a perfectly innocent man enters Russian society. It was incredibly slow moving at times and there seemed to be a large focus on minor characters and different discussions on ideology, religion, society, and more. While these sections were tedious and frustrating at times, they were important in highlighting the juxtaposition between the innocent prince and the people in society. The translators of this version encompassed the writing style very well. This book caused a lot of reflection on how society affects different people, inherent goodness or badness of people, how kindness can be misconstrued, and so much more.

A sad yet beautiful exploration of the dangers of being kind and good in a cruel society. With thought provoking discussions about religion, the Russian spirit, and morality. It also makes a wonderful use out of Christ allegory and literary allusions.
