Not a book for me, though it's clearly a masterpiece. Also shout-out to Constantine Gregory for an incredible piece of work, narrating this beast!

“What do I care about all this beauty, when every minute, every second, I must and am forced to know that even this tiny fly that is now buzzing near me in a ray of sunlight, even it participates in this banquet and chorus, knows its place, loves it, and is happy, while I alone am a castaway, and only in my pusillanimity did not want to understand it till now!”

This book has a million characters and side plots that are irrelevant.
Also, at the beginning of most chapters Dostoyevsky interjects his own analysis of his book which was annoying, as I believe the reader is the one to decide what the story’s message is and what the character’s represent.
However, the biggest fault was the characterisation of Nastasya who was unfairly dealt the brunt of terrible descriptions, eg. a “temptress”, “insane” and with a terrifying face allegedly. Of course I wasn’t expecting a feminist masterpiece but I just couldn’t overlook how poorly she was treated (not just by the characters but the author as well).
I will try another Dostoyevsky as in the notes of this book it does say that The Idiot is not popular amongst wider readers which I only saw when I finished reading this.
This was a rough first impression :(
