I like the ideas in this book, but the writing feels a bit messier compared to the stuff usually considered Dostoevsky's masterpieces (Crime and Punishment / Brothers Karamazov), and I didn't like parts of the plot as much (also what's with all the random moments of characters laughing spontaneously like maniacs), but the ending is good.

As usual, don't take everything in the story at face value cause there's typically more going on under the hood that's easy to miss at first glance. But that said, I think this one in particular needs more historical context than usual to really get. Recommended more if you're already a fan and want to see where the author came from, cause the subject material is a lot closer to his personal life.

“let us not forget that the reasons for human actions are usually incalculably more complex and diverse than we tend to explain them later, and are seldom clearly manifest.”

are you kidding me this book was amazing. dostoevsky was absolutely brilliant & i’ll always love reading his works. i feel like i gain a deeper understanding of human nature each time i enter one of his created worlds. the idiot is basically about a man of pure innocence returning to russia where he’s surrounded by greed & manipulation. jealousy & love then get involved and everything escalates! i felt so anxious & heartbroken while reading this, but what else can you expect from dostoevsky???

i really appreciate how thoughtful the plot was. i think the buildup of the story was done greatly & i was at the edge of my seat the entire time. when the ending finally came i had to take a couple minutes to compose myself because even though everything was foreshadowed, it was executed so well?!?! i’m really glad i took my time reading the idiot & analyzing the characters!! i was able to build connections w/ the book & if you read my reviews, then you know i place a lot of value on that ;) i’d say you have to be patient with this book though because it’s very slow paced & sometimes he throws pieces of information at you w/o giving you the full context and it gets a little confusing
