Not nearly as good as The Brothers Karamazov or Crime & Punishment by either style or concept. I even greatly prefer Poor Folk to this; but I can at least say it's probably more accomplished than The Crocodile... maybe. I feel sorry for anyone who built their image of Dostoevsky around this book as opposed to the aforementioned ones, if not just in addition to them. The length of this thing is not justified by it's overall contents, unfortunately. Could have been great if cut down by 70%. It had a few moments here & there. Sad!

the only other dostoyevsky i've read is the brothers karamazov, which is a masterpiece, so this is a fun point of comparison for me.
as the introduction goes into, fedya d had the first book planned out then ended up flying by the seat of his pants for the remaining three. yes, it shows; no, it didn't ruin the experience for me. i really enjoyed the setting of various drawing rooms at people's dachas because of how ridiculous the drama is. everybody's histrionic, half the characters are compulsive liars, there's a hypothetical legal defense for a hypothetical man who hypothetically ate 60 clergymen and 5 or 6 babies, there are not one but two unhinged birthday parties, myshkin is trapped in the most high-stakes round of 'yes, and...' in the world, etc., sure, it isn't as polished as later works, but i really enjoyed my time in the world and was excited to sit down and spend more time with the characters 🙂
i think i read this book wrong because i WAS reading it as a comedy until the last two chapters which got dangerously close to making me cry, thus necessitating a mandatory 5-star rating. anyway nastasya filippovna is the joker for women and also my dream girl.

Dosty my old pal, you’ve done it again. Although the endings always make me so very sad.
I really loved the characters in this book!
