what fox does in Down the Drain is nothing short of alchemy—turning chaos into art, pain into poetry, and survival into triumph. it’s raw, it’s relentless, it’s powerfully female.

When Julia refers to her favourite book as a teenager being Junky by William S. Burroughs, I had a huge a-ha moment. Not only does this admission reflect on the then state of her life and wellbeing, but also makes very clear the similarities I was sensing but couldn't just put my finger on. I think that's because I find Fox to be a far more compelling narrator than Burroughs, who is more likely cast as one of the men who terrorised Julia's younger years. Her style is a little salt-of-the-earth, and her ability to story tell has no specific roots in a linguistic flourish, but I think this keeps her as consistent as it might lead to a less memorable experience. Someone like Eve Babitz, for example, who seems to cover much of the same subject matter while somewhat redacting the antics of the rich and famous, stylistically trumps Julia. At the same time, Babitz would never be able to write a book like Down The Drain. I don't necessarily find Julia Fox charming, but I find her incredibly endearing, raw, and completely honest. The whole thing feels like a very long AA monologue. The second half feels a little rushed, a little less immersive than the first, and I'm not sure it sticks the ending. All being said, I really believed this book, and felt Fox's personality shine through consistently. I'll totally pick up the next one.
