This story managed to charm me, despite itself. The main character, Katie, was a bit hard to like, and the secondary characters, for the most part, weren't developed enough to engage with. However, the story itself was a reasonably well-done and charming take on old fables and morality tales. I had some small quibbles with the end, but overall I think it was a good afternoon read.

Seconds will hopefully be the last of guilty pleasures I’ve been treating myself to after The Count of Monte Cristo. This is a graphic novel from the fecund imagination of Bryan Lee O’Malley, famous for the Scott Pilgrim series.
The artwork in this is gorgeous: heavily borrowing from manga and pictures from Russian storybooks. (The latter were easily available in Indian libraries in the 80s.) The story revolves around Katie, who co-owns a restaurant and is planning to run her own one day. She discovers a house spirit, whose mushrooms can help change reality. Weird stuff starts happening once she goes overboard on having a perfect life by fixing everything using mushrooms.
I enjoyed Seconds so much that I’m highly tempted to read Scott Pilgrim next. I found the Westernized-manga character art incredibly cute and the colors are lush and dark. The story is very funny and there is always a peppy mood about the characters, especially Katie, who is just one cool gal. Bryan borrows very generously from manga, even the idea of a house spirit (kami), how its depicted and its central role in the story shows that. Finally, don’t be surprised if you get the urge to draw out some of the sketches in the book! :-)

Kind of an odd, Groundhog Day-esque story, but still with the trademark wit and humor that Brian Lee O'Malley is known for. It's not Scott Pilgrim, but it's still good.

This is a funny, sweet but also scary graphic novel about how the possibility to change mistakes can vastly alter our existence. It's the story of Katie, a 29 year old chef who's achieved her first dream, but is stalled in the process of starting her second one. When the chance to alter the past to change her future is given to her, Katie takes it, and is able to be the confident women confronting her ex-boyfriend. But each time she changes something, it has dangerous consequences, and it gets more and more difficult to figure out what her new reality is. Will Katie alter her past beyond all recognition, or will she be able to live with her mistakes?

Where do you begin with Seconds? Maybe with the fact that writer/artist/creator Bryan Lee O’Malley hates bread and wants to destroy that entire industry that has been around for countless years? Maybe. Maybe we should begin with the fact that the creator/writer/artist of Scott Pilgrim, you know that movie you really liked because it was awesome that started as a comic that is also awesome and was recently colored by Nathan Fairbairn and released in hardcover, has come back after the mega success of that series with a one-and-done graphic novel. A graphic novel about a woman who aspires to open her very own restaurant, after the successful ‘Seconds’ restaurant, with her very own menu and, while trying to obtain this goal, she discovers a note book, a mushroom and card with instructions to:
Write your mistake
Ingest one mushroom
Go to sleep
Wake anew

As a die hard Scott Pilgrim fan, this was a really good graphic novel by the same author :) The story was great and the art was fun! I loved it
