Definitely a book for teens. I didn’t despise reading it because it was an easy read and I could turn my brain off. But I wouldn’t say that I’m keeping this book in my collection. The author had interesting things to say and executed it well, but it’s clear I’m not the target audience and that’s okay!

The musical was better in my opinion. I did watch the musical before though.
The character were shallow and self obsessed (but they're teenagers so idk) and were the same from start to end. Jeremy didn't truly learn anything. In the musical the characters were much more relatable and lovable. The musical isn't my favorite by all means but its far better than this.
But I will say, the book is very funny and I laughed a lot. Though some of the jokes are pretty outdated, it's still funny overall. And they're were a few very relatable moments in my opinion. Also I know it's an older book and it's supposed to be over the top statire but the way they treated the girls was gross.
It's could've been way better but it's not the worst thing ever. It was very quick and funny. The ending was terrible.

I laughed out loud a couple of times. Vizzini had a keen insight into the mind of anxious and insecure teens. This is a good book best suited for just the right reader.

Such a damn shame Ned is no longer with us. Wish I had read this years ago.
maybe a 2.25? rounding because i’m trying to be nice because i know this is meant to be satire and over the top... and there was a rare scene or two that i could enjoy... but i just ... could not stand the majority of this book.
it just was incredibly frustrating. none of the characters are really likable. i read this as someone who is familiar with the musical, and the characters are nothing alike. everyone’s favorite michael never has his crying in the bathroom scene or really any scene where we’re supposed to feel bad for him, he just kinda fetishized asian women. everyone just feels offensive, which maybe at the time was more normal but looking at it now it just feels gross?
i’ll give it that the storyline overall is a bit better than the musical adaptation, in the sense it isn’t just “technology bad! evil computers are taking over the world!” and instead the squip is just unreliable and unhealthy because, well, human behavior can’t be perfected with statistics and computer searches.
it just no longer feels relevant. i struggle to believe any high school experience was remotely similar to what these caricatures go through. i felt so much secondhand embarrassment, and not in a fun and quirky way.
and i thought the musical was bad... but i’d rather listen to the smartphone hour on repeat than reread this.

i regret re reading this, there was a reason i blocked it out of my memories after the first time
I read it because I was OBSESSED with the musical, and it was very...meh. I mean it was good, and I love all the characters, I just don’t like it as much as the musical.
