It’s disturbing to me that this is the entertainment we, as adults, offer our teenagers. That we accept that this is how our young men think. That we accept that this is how they treat young women. That we accept that in this much-lauded book young women are often portrayed as one-dimensional, gossipy, vapid “sluts” (to use the language of the author). That we accept a scene in a book that shows several young men secretly watching and videotaping a sexual encounter between a boy and a girl and never call it what it is. This is rape culture. We must do better than this.
I like Vizzini...he's a kind of quirky that totally works for me. ☺

I thought this book lacked emotional intensity. I never connected to the protagonist, Jeremy. There were some potentially dramatic moments that never paid off-- including the climax.
I read this because my sister and I love the musical that was adapted from the book. Maybe I would have liked this more if I hadn’t fallen in love with the show first but who knows. The characters aren’t terribly likeable- they’re kind of awful, in fact. Even Michael, who in the show is a precious cinnamon roll, too good for this world, too pure, is kinda a tool. The Squip was underwhelming. The ending was very abrupt. Like dang. I wanted to love this but nope. Not even a little bit.
** 5/5 stars.¹
¹ so high of a rating for me because it's a major comfort to me and it means a lot.
is it a problematic book? yes. is it a major source of comfort for me? also yes.
holds my hands out for one dumb blond (michael).
