The journey I had with this book, whew. It started off being a 2 star read, what is the point, no plot blah. But at the halfway point my third eye was opened and suddenly this book became incredibly funny and witty. Jacaranda eventually became endearing to me, in the way only a good insufferable main character can be. A great introduction to Babitz for me, I'm captured by the way she writes.
Favorite Quotes:
“Picasso had been through the sky, come out the other end, dug to China with a child’s shovel, and seen opposite skies . . . while Matisse just sat at home. And somehow his skies were bluer” (126).
“It was uphill work being a wet blanket with Cole Porter in charge of the scenery” (148).
“She’s going to a psychiatrist, I found that out--what they call ‘professional help?’ And I don’t have any professional help so I’m at her mercy, which is why I wrote the book. If I ever get enough money, I’m getting professional help, too. Fight fire with fire is what they tell you” (169).
“For breakfast they had coffee and hot fudge sundaes with nuts and unsweetened whipped cream. They both had iron constitutions. Outside, New York had begun its Sunday best” (227).
"All waves are the same, pulled by the moon, spent at the end. But no two are alike even more” (244).

I almost put this book down, but it just kept me interested. Maybe I’ll like it better if I pick it up some day in the future and try it again. Right now, I think it’s just okay. I finished it though, but I’m not entirely sure what I read.
