i read this because a book influencer talked about this book a lot! i was very disappointed. you don’t get to know the characters, the plot is meh at best, and the writing is whatever.
Not to be annoying, but I think the reviewers who didn’t like this book just didn’t get it. It’s a watercolor depiction of LA in the 1970s, written in the 1970s…and of course, it’s semi-autobiographical. Looking at this story through a 2024 lens is going to be disappointing. The magic of the book is found by letting yourself be transported into the opulence and mystique of the 1979 LA high-rolling lifestyle. Think the last season of Mad Men. Also, Eve Babitz is a cultural icon.
