Gosh I loved this. I didn't really know much going in, so one of the main plot points really took me by surprise. This book is so beautiful and it made me cry a lot. I'd definitely recommend it.

I read this book because I wanted to read more queer books by black authors.
If you like magical realism, astrology and spirituality this might be the book for you. However I personally don’t like those things.
the blurb made me think it was going to be revealed that she was pregnant, the cancer surprised me. I’m glad Mabel didn’t make some miraculous recovery as a result of Audre’s ‘healer’ ability or stones or green juice.

This book is an amazingly thought provoking story, and somehow even in the midst of a terminal illness diagnosis, the characters still are able to make the reader feel hopeful. I loved the characters of Audre and Mabel, and the journey that they took in finding themselves even through the difficulties and challenges that they were facing. The growth of their friendship was beautiful, and I loved every second of the journey. The inclusion of Afua and his story really made the book, in the sense of giving Mabel something to live for, and showed that she could leave her mark on this world in a significant way for someone who had helped her find herself in her darker moments.

I really enjoyed hearing about Trinidad, Whitney, Queenie and Afua. The characters were well drawn. I enjoyed the shameless depiction of sexuality. I appreciated the lack of instalove. This wasn’t as romantically focused as I had thought. It focused much more on general intimacy and self-discovery. I love all the joy and sweetness in this novel, as well as the deep sadness. Hearing about astrology and Queenie’s spiritualism was also fascinating.
