"In the end we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it."
holy SHIT this book ramps up...i physically jumped at one point hooooLEY! upsetting read, almost traumatising in some places. the largest bone i have to pick - why do so many men write women/about women/desire like That? it's like...a noticeable, grotesque style and so many men have it.... anyway this was terrifying.

“Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood.”
Terrifying and fascinating. I especially enjoyed the themes of censorship, brainwashing, independent thought and government surveillance. Though perhaps a little dry in points, this was perfect for me. The more I kept reading, the more scared I became. This is the reality we are living in, in some ways. This book was written ahead of its time, and the author's imagination is clearly commendable.
Just so many thoughts and too many emotions. The book was actually so good, like I can't even say anything, I'm in shock. Definitely a book I eventually have to reread, I think it might become one of my favorite classics if I just reread it later.

“At the end of it, all you really care about is yourself “
Like this was just so disgustingly accurate to our time and easily one of the darkest and most thought provoking novels I've (ever?) read. Ugh just phenomenal and just felt like I ascended my body..
Anyways, the book was honestly kinda scary and haunting, but Orwell's point came across. The big bro thing was the definition of gaslighting. I think it was really promising first half but I did not like the last wee bit as much. And, I will be completely honest... I liked this book but I couldn't give it 5 stars😭😭😭... animal farm was better imo.. I think my hopes were too high because I just went into it with animal farm in mind and that was just really different from this one..
“Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.”
Simply put: gaslighting 101
george orwell, you freak.
This book kind of broke me, not gonna lie. The fact that this book is still very relevent to this day is astonishing to me. You see the attitude of some characters, systems that are broken, the glorification of people, how people are okay to live inhumane lifestyles, just because they don't know better and so many other things you recognize in your own life or in the media... It really makes you think about everything around you and if you are okay with living like that or even if you should be okay with it... I couldn't recommend this book more.
I was coincidentally reading 1984 at the same time as one of my (male) friends, so I think the mere circumstance of our vaguely awkward discussions of *certain scenes* made me increasingly aware of the gender power dynamics at play. I don't think I can ever forget this book or get rid of some of the imagery—in some ways, it's pretty tame compared to other stuff I've read, but because it was so shockingly stark, it really stuck with me (kind of like Brave New World, actually). But Orwell's writing was like origami or something, compacted incredibly small and precise, and I'm still not sure if what draws me to it is the temptation to unfold it or rip the paper in half. 5/5.

A terrifying look into a possible future. Brilliantly written, intense, and heartbreaking. It would be perfect if the pacing of the novel didn't come to a complete halt to dump "exposition" after Wilson discovers a book.
