YA fantasy can often feel quite formulaic, so it is a rare treat when a new book feels completely unique. Dylan Farrow’s Hush manages to do more than just be unique. Its dark world and eerie magic system set the stage for a story that readers will be sitting with long after they close the covers. In a world where ink can spread a dangerous disease and only the mysterious Bards can learn to write, and thereby command magic, protagonist Shae emerges as an inspiring—though often reckless—new heroine. Her determination to find the truth at all turns leads for an action-packed book, and the twists and turns are hard to see coming. And I mean that in the best way. The narrative deftly blurs the lines between truth and lies, reality and hysteria. When I finished Farrow’s epic debut, I was struck with the overwhelming feeling that I was holding in my hands the Next Big Thing in YA. The first in a new series, Hush will be perfect for fans of The Hunger Games or Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse. Do yourself a big favor and read this book!
