This is a creepy, terrifying yet evocative tale set in Victorian England - all of which are checks on my list of reading needs. I loved how the story played out, and how rich the characters were. The narration was near flawless, poetic at times, and raw when necessary.
The characters were the crown of this plot - Iris, Louis and Silas were spectacular - the nuances in them, their reactions, words and thoughts were thought provoking. However, what is even more praiseworthy is how the author has crafted the secondary characters, Rose and Albie, and the PRB. Oh Albie!! How I adored him.
A story about obsession, love, independence, insecurity - it is hard to detail out all the aspects that the book has captured, yet it has - set in a period that has been described with such honesty and beauty, that you cannot put it down once the story grabs hold of you. Parts of it are downright scary, parts so full of love that you cannot but shed a tear or two - the book is a treat to historical fiction lovers. It has everything./

A very engaging historical novel - as Iris struggles to find some freedom and pleasure in her life, obsessive Silas circles closer and closer to her. I loved all the details about Iris's art, and Silas' taxidermy.

Just not for me. I thought I’d try some historical gothic fiction for a change - and I’m sure lots of people will really enjoy this if that’s your cup of tea.
However, I found this book really slow to get going and I had to force myself not to skim read it. It picks up the pace about two thirds through and I couldn’t put it down then but it’s was definitely a slow burn.
