I enjoyed it but not as much as her historical fiction.

This is a great start to a series. I love mysteries, well written ones, and this meets the criteria.

Serviceable. Queen's Man is readable—a medieval murder mystery that's good for reading in bed when you're trying to turn your brain off enough in order to sleep—but the characters are stock and the writing is rather wooden. The period setting is mostly okay, but the attempts at writing the dialogue in some sort of faux medieval idiom was painful—the characters tend not to speak in contractions, and I think I started to develop a facial tic every time someone said "for certes." Probably it's a mistake to read fiction set in the period you research for a living, but oh well. My search for a well-written novel (series) set in medieval Europe continues.

I enjoy Penman's writing and am quite happy to spend my reading time in 12th century Britain.

This was a nice medieval mystery about Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Lots of period details. Well researched. I felt there was too much wandering about waiting for something to happen. The ending was unexpected although the author used my least favorite plot device.

Enjoyable, but not wholly convincing, but then I had just read Adam Roberts discussion of historical mysteries, and perhaps that influenced my thinking!

That article, FWIW is at http://sibilantfricative.blogspot.co.uk/2014/09/graham-edwards-talus-and-frozen-king.html

This was the first book I've read by Penman, and I absolutely loved it. The characters were believable, the story was engaging, and she included enough historical details for me to get a good picture of the world the characters inhabited without being buried. I'm definitely recommending this one to my friends who like HF.
