after being disappointed by the previous comics I’d read (which were the anthologies), I was pleasantly surprised by this one! it had the atla spirit I felt was missing from the anthologies, and the characterisation wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. was it good? not really — aang felt incredibly out of character (he would never be THIS chill about katara being separated from the group — there’s no way he’d choose attempting to debunk propaganda that he isn’t supposed to know at this point over KATARA), and there was this insinuation that katara is “soft” and that she needs to “be tough like toph” which is just… such a grave misinterpretation of her character but n e ways—

I appreciated the introduction of some fire nation propaganda that wasn’t addressed in the show, but it felt so out of place since we never really see the fire nation “from the inside” until book three (this comic is set during book two) and, as I’ve already mentioned, it allowed for some serious aang mischaracterisation because he just seemed so uncharacteristically selfish??? it really rubbed me the wrong way.

overall, out of the comics I’ve read, this one is definitely my favourite so far even if I did have my fair share of issues with it.

Aang’s words seemed a little out of character, but I liked the chemistry between Jiang and Katara.
