Unexpected romance, tugged at my heart in the best way. Aside from the setting and language, it also felt very modern! Perhaps this is just me finally seeing how this classic shaped literature.

If I only considered it on the merits of being a romance novel, I'd give it a much lower score. I don't personally understand the appeal of Mr. Rochester, and the power dynamic, the age gap, among other things, prevents me from understanding the appeal. The classism and racism was shockingly prominent in the later half and made it hard to read at times. But setting that aside, I appreciate the feminist story of Jane embracing herself as a person with interests and desires that are equally as valid as any man. I can see how it was important for its time. But I think there are books now that do the same thing but better, and don't see too much value in keeping it around.

Put it on my list since I saw it in the 'dark academia' list, but it should be in the daddy issues category.

I guess this is a classic for a reason. I hated the first part, but the second and third I actually found myself really enjoying. I thought the dynamics between Mr Rochester and Jane were quite cute and I found myself genuinely intrigued as to what would happen next. I ended up having to listen to it on audible to get it finished but overall an incredible story.
