McFadden writes difficult topics here with a set of characters that engender such empathy for what they go through.

I enjoyed the story of two completely different women becoming friends and learning from one another and actually having growth in their own journey’s. Even though the main character, Sugar, was not like by the town people based on her way of making income her next door neighbor accepted her for who she was and never judge. I mean these women had completely different upbringings and lives and yet they managed to be real and raw with each other as their friendship grew. As the reader secrets were revealed and shocking moments but it made sense when you think about in the end.

I really would’ve love for Joe to find out the connection to Sugar earlier but maybe that’s for the second book.

I’m so glad she didn’t run away with Seth!

Wow this book is heavy! Set in the South of America in the 1950s, this is a character driven books that really has you empathising. (Trigger warning) it covers themes of abuse, race, prostitution.

It’s based around the unlikely friendship of two women but delves into their backstories and the hardships they’ve been through.
