This is the most recent book in the series; those of you who are tired of my reviews on this series will be able to celebrate that there aren’t any more coming for a while.
At no time did this flag or suffer from author or reader burnout. Box writes this in such a way that the subplots are as interesting as the main one, and he covers issues that a lot of authors are less likely to touch.
The British embassy is up in arms, and the pressure has trickled down to Wyoming’s new fictional incompetent Republican governor. While the previous governor, a Scoop Jackson-style Democrat, thoroughly trusted Joe Pickett, the new guy doesn’t know what to think. The pressure coming from the embassies stem from the fact that a British woman has disappeared from a Wyoming dude ranch. The new governor wants Joe Pickett to figure out what’s happening. Pickett is forced to deal with shrill members of the press and more. His friend, Nate, wants him to assist with the mystery of the death of numerous Bald Eagles—deaths that negatively impact the falconry work that Nate does.
This is made more interesting by the fact that Joe’s oldest daughter, Sheridan, works for the dude ranch from which one of the women disappeared.
This leaves me assuming and hoping that the Joe Pickett series isn’t done. If there are more coming, I will be ready to snag them whenever they’re available.

The usual Joe Pickett. And I mean that as a good thing! All the usual characters and a few new ones.
The plot was well-developed and exciting. The viciousness of midwinter in the mountains in Wyoming is perfectly conveyed and it almost gave me frostbite in July so realistic were the descriptions.
I love this series and this is no exception.

Mystery book group pick - Hard to review this book without spoilers, but let's just say that I might have given the book four stars if I didn't find the "bad guys" to be a bit of a stretch. A few characters in the book could have used a bit more development as well. Overall though the plot was fast paced and it was an easy read. The weather is the total opposite of what I'm experiencing in real life so reading in the winter might have made it seem a bit more atmospheric

Love how Joe’s relationship with Sheridan has grown with her coming into adulthood. Also love her relationship with Nate. Nate was too funny in this book.
I think this was much better than most the recent Pickett mysteries. Though I still don't really understand the politics in these books. Like the general message seems to be corporate greed and excessive capitalism bad. So I'm on board for that. And there's the usual Rocky mountains/west of the mountain rugged individualism, which doesn't seem to be taken to insurrectionist extremes here. The government is at best bumbling, at worst full of craven gruel people. Which I'm on board for. But also Pickett is the government, so IDK. This book seemed to glory way less in gruesome killing than previous books and had an acceptable amount of Nate.
C.J. Box's latest Joe Pickett novel is a great addition to this outstanding series. Wyoming has a new, highly unpleasant governor who tasks Pickett with finding a missing British businesswomen. Meanwhile, Nate Romanowski drags Joe into another case on behalf of a group of falconers. The further Joe delves into both cases, the more he realizes that forces are at work to stop him from solving either case. Both mysteries were interesting and original, and the resolutions were satisfying. One of my favorite things about C.J. Box is that he integrates current events/policy issues into his novels informing readers about important issues while spinning a fabulous tale. The Disappeared tackles two such issues: a headline-grabbing, social media fueled item involving Wyoming dude ranches and an exception to wildlife protection policies granted to those operating clean energy businesses. I was fascinated to learn about both. All in all, The Disappeared is well worth the read!
This was a very fast read. Joe is directed by the new governor to look into the disappearance of a British tourist who went missing after her stay at a chi-chi "dude ranch" (spa-ranch?) months earlier. Turns out his daughter was working there at the time, and it's hard to turn down the governor, so with misgivings, he's off to southern Wyoming where he finds Nate and a lot of weirdness going on.
Lots of things hinge on the course of this novel. The next one is going to be interesting. I don't know if Joe's going to spend much time outside doing his job. ...oh, wait...
