The first part of the story was a little bit tangled up for me, the end of the story was a little bit tangled up for me, but the middle part was superb and made up for the tangles on either end.
You have to like British dark suspense with all that that entails of everything having hidden meaning and no one is who they appear to be at any given time. I know I love watching these on BBC America, with all of the visual cues and atmosphere.
My sister's been on me to read Minette's books, so this was the way I chose to do the first one. I'll read more and listen to more.
Four British atmospheric suspenseful beans......

Quite a good mystery, which only barely steers clear of making the ending a tidy one. How very typical of British murder mysteries these days.

I'd forgotten how good Minette Walters is at creating a story that's just full of actually interesting details. She keeps a good pace but doesn't keep the tension so high it gives me a headache. Somehow it manages to not be too political, which is a relief, and she leaves enough room for me to build on my own opinions.
There were a few spots in the story where she lost me, where I'm not sure, what is going on or why, but thankfully they're rare and didn't stop me from enjoying this immensely.
Initially I was disappointed by the ending because it felt like a rather abrupt petering out of the story, but when I woke up the next morning thinking about it and laughing about it, I decided I liked it after all.

This book is well written, but apart from that, it didn't check many boxes for me.

The plot revolves around a crime, but that is not really what the book is about. It is much more of a character study, a study of the psychology of the characters.
The plot, to me, felt a bit all over the place and sometimes the dialogue just went off on a seeming tangent and I became a bit bored.
