Most successful at being a gothic *mood.* I didn’t feel completely satisfied by the plot but T. Kingfisher is great at packing a fun, surprising story in a short amount of pages.

T Kingfisher has such a smooth and beautiful writing style! I feel like novellas are much harder for me to give 4-5 stars to because there's only so much you can do with like 150 pages, but I did enjoy this one. The concept of sworn soldiers was smoothly introduced, the camaraderie between the characters enjoyable by the end, the atmosphere was a nice slightly-creepy-but-not-too-much. Overall a pretty solid experience, just not something that really amazed me.
