I cannot emphasize enough how spectacular this book was to read. It captured me immediately, which is important for me when reading a book. Jacqueline Bublitz does a great job of following two major characters through the narration of one character. At first, I didn't know who was talking about who but soon caught on that the book is told from the perspective of one main character who is now a "spirit" and can make judgments in each scene.
I enjoyed the realism of this book, yet it also held enough fiction for e to feel uncomfortable and in awe. I didn't know what I was reading about until I started the book and am pleasantly surprised. I will toss in a light trigger warning with the murder of a female and the abuse of her body after death. However, it is only enough to make you cringe rather than curl into the dark spaces of your mind.
This book is about justice, camaraderie, mystery, love, and the humanity that resides in grief.

Barely 3 stars...mainly because of Alice - interesting back story, and the novel's focus on the victim is a good plot device.
I would have liked to know more about the Death Club people and their stories because I found the murder mystery less than challenging. The red herrings were obvious as was the murderer when he finally arrived in the narrative. Someone who is not part of the story in any way suddenly arriving on-scene is a pretty poor way to solve a murder mystery imo.
The novel is repetitive and definitely not a page turner.
Ruby is frustrating! She moves across the world to escape a poor relationship where she will always play second fiddle and doesn't let go! Dump him, Ruby!

Ruby has fled Australia for New York City, leaving behind everything. She had to flee. New York City felt like the safest and most remote place to try to get over Ash, the man she’d been having an affair with. Ash is engaged, and there is no chance he’s going to end that engagement for Ruby.

Alice lost her mom at a young age. She’s been raised by a friend of her mom’s, who really doesn’t keep tabs on her. So when the chance comes up to go to her friend Tammy’s cabin, she agrees. Only she doesn’t end up there. And where she does end up might be worse than anything she could have imagined. When she runs again, it is to New York City.

Both women have pasts they’d like to forget. But how their paths will cross in New York City could never be imagined.

I enjoyed this suspense novel. There was a lot of backstory for both Alice and Ruby. A lot of time spent getting to the crux of the mystery. While I felt the book was slow paced for the first half, it does pick up and keep you more riveted in the second half. It is an emotional story that is not easy to absorb. But it’s also something that happens in our country far too often.

It’s a good novel. Enjoyed.
