I found this story very compelling and it was very hard to put down. I loved Ruby and her choices and actions, I felt my own self through her easily. I did find Alice a bit annoying honestly, the cliff hanger voice that was given to her was a bit bleating, and I felt that her haunting was a bit too... literal. I found that parallels between Ruby and Alice were a nice reminder of our closeness to strangers, but also a good tool for propelling the mystery - for example in the imagery of a light being turned down preceding their interactions with Tom. I adored the commentary about women's behaviour around men, our tendency to turn fear, anger, into politeness and calm - to placate them for our own sake - and I think Ruby and Alice's musings about this problem reflect those of many real people. I also appreciated how clear their final, imagined interactions were. This acknowledgement that yes, we tell each other to be safe, but really we should be able to say how strong and capable each other are, how much we should do what will make us happy and free. We are sometimes just barely surviving through it, and we shouldn't have to.
First book club book. Deep rooted themes of feminism, flipped the murder mystery genre on its head. Amazing.
